The International Maritime Organization Gender Equality Network (IMOGENder) is a forum for delegates of IMO Member States and observer delegations to work in a coordinated manner, share information and exchange ideas and best practices aimed at achieving gender equality and promoting the participation of women in the maritime sector. IMOGENder was created to provide a platform for Member States
and observer delegations to collectively support efforts towards the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

Meet Our Coordinators

Nurul Fitrah

An experienced diplomat specialising in international relations, with extensive experience working with multilateral and intergovernmental organisations, including the United Nations General Assembly, UN Women, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and ASEAN. Expertise lies in maritime security and sustainability, with a particular focus on maritime decarbonisation and climate financing: thesis on sustainability was featured at the 2012 Nanyang Technological University Sustainability Expo, showcasing academic contributions to the field; and facilitated informal negotiations at the IMO, driving collaborative efforts to address global maritime challenges.

Mark Geauber

Mark is an accomplished diplomat and maritime affairs expert, serving as Germany's Alternate Representative at the International Maritime Organization (IMO). He focuses on sustainable maritime practices and environmental stewardship in the shipping industry. His role involves collaborating with global partners to enhance maritime safety and protect marine ecosystems. Known for his strategic vision, Mark shapes Germany's maritime policies internationally. In his free time, he enjoys sailing and exploring coastal areas, drawing inspiration from the environments he aims to protect.

2021

Established Established the “Women on Board” Mentorship Programme the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) and World Maritime University (WMU)  with the aim of providing a platform for knowledge sharing, and a coordinated effort to advance gender equality within the maritime community.

2022

The 'IMO Gender Equality Award' was put forward by IMOGENder Network Members and was approved by the Council during its 128th session (C 128). To annually honour an individual that has made significant contributions to advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women in the maritime sector.

2023

In 2023, we mourned the loss of our beloved Member, Mrs. Mandana Mansoorian, who served as the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the International Maritime Organization and was also the Vice-Chair of the IMO Technical Cooperation Committee. In her memory, IMOGENder honoured her family with an award celebrating her vast contribution to  equality and capacity-building. 

2024

The first IMOGENder Network supported school visit to IMO HQ commenced in order to understanding of global maritime issues and inspires future contributions to maritime affairs, fostering a safer and more sustainable world.

2024

Open House initiative launched where members  organise events at their respective embassies to conduct workshops aimed at tackling gender inequality , and focusing on practical solutions. The innagural one, ‘Women in Maritime: Identifying Concrete Actions to Get Beyond 2%’ was held at Canada House.

Who can join and be a Member of IMOGENder Network?

Membership in IMOGENder is open to a variety of stakeholders, including Representatives from IMO Member States based in London, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) affiliated with the IMO, and the IMO Secretariat. This diverse membership ensures a comprehensive approach to promoting gender equality within the maritime industry.

Who can participate in 'Women on Board' Mentor Programme?

Currently, mentors must be part of the IMOGENder Network or representatives who were previously based in the IMO and maintain ongoing connections. Mentees in this program are female students from the World Maritime University or the International Maritime Law Institute. This initiative aims to foster professional development and mentorship within the maritime industry.
